Psychodynamic Psychotherapy · EMDR
John Murphy
Trauma-informed therapy for complex emotional and relational difficulties
I’m a psychodynamic psychotherapist and EMDR practitioner with 30 years’ experience in the NHS and private practice, working with adults facing anxiety, depression, trauma, and complex relational difficulties. My approach combines psychodynamic thinking with trauma-informed, evidence-based practice — helping you understand what’s happening beneath the surface, not just manage the symptoms.
About
Coming to therapy often means arriving at a point where things feel harder to carry alone. I offer a space to slow down, think, and make sense of what’s going on — whether that’s anxiety, low mood, difficult relationships, or the lasting effects of past experiences.
I trained in psychodynamic psychotherapy and EMDR, and my approach is shaped by 30 years working in the NHS and private practice — in cancer care, primary care, and specialist trauma services. I don’t believe in quick fixes or one-size-fits-all techniques. Instead, I try to understand the individual person in front of me: how their history shows up in the present, and what they actually need to move forward.
I currently work as a liaison specialist at The Royal Marsden Hospital. I trained at the Anna Freud Centre and the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust, and am a past UKCP registered group psychotherapist. I have worked at a national level advising on complex investigation cases.
